Tenth Bishop of Ogdensburg
(1968-1994)

 

The coat of arms of Most Reverend Stanislaus Joseph Brzana, tenth bishop of Ogdensburg, has a green gallero with tassels and cross surmounting the shield. The left blue side of the shield bears the arms of the See of Ogdensburg, a white Fort La Presentation and golden oak leaves of the English family of the Ogdens (oak dene).
  
The sinister field includes a fish, a symbol of the Polic family of Brzana, and two stars representing the Mikosz family of the bishop’s mother. Bishop Brzana also desired the stars to recall the bishop’s role to teach the Truth, as well as to honor his own teachers - Jesuits, Franciscans, Felicians, and parish priests. The basket of loaves represents the Holy Eucharist. The olive branches and crown honor Mary, Queen of Peace, patroness of the parish where Bishop Brzana served prior to his appointment to the See of Ogdensburg. The wavy bars are reminders of the waters of Lake Erie and the Niagara frontier, homeland of Bishop Brzana.
  
Bishop Brzana’s motto is, DEUS CARITAS EST, ”GOD IS LOVE,”
